The experience of discovery is a powerful force. Over the years, many have traveled Western North Carolina in search of that combination of wonder, excitement, and satisfaction. Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto traveled though WNC in the sixteenth century in search of gold, and Japanese photographer George Masa’s passion for exploring our expansive mountain ranges led to the creation the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Miners have even discovered rare emeralds in our mountain caverns (read more about this in “Hidden in Hiddenite” on page 38).
Although Hurricane Helene transformed the landscape of Western North Carolina, it didn’t destroy it. Our home may look a little different now, but make no mistake—it’s still spectacular. Our Images of Western North Carolina photo contest finalists certainly proved that. Turn to page 60 to see the finalists and winners of our 2025 contest.
Right now, Western North Carolina is ripe for discovery and exploration. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, summertime is the best time to check out what our home has to offer. In “The Great Staycation,” we’ve compiled some of our favorite places to explore in all the regions of Western North Carolina, from dining and shopping to hiking and lodging (page 86). Looking to really get out there? Check out our guide to backcountry camping on page 98, which includes our favorite spots to pitch your tent and how to do so safely.
One of the best ways to find adventure and beauty in Western North Carolina is by staying connected with WNC magazine.
